A Beatles' Recording Timeline: Reference Mothers

THE BEATLES' REFERENCE MOTHERS
The lists that follow detail my personal decisions as to which recordings comprise the

**** ESSAY **********************************************************************************

Lists of Beatles' alternate takes and alternate mixes seem to go on forever.
But when we say "alternate", what do we mean? The alternative compared
to what?

Apple, Capitol, and EMI's judgement regarding the catalog has
been questionable to say the least. They have effectively deleted some great stuff
from the catalog, e.g, the mono 45 mix of Revolution, the stereo mix of
the LP A Hard Day's Night, etc.

So, it is up to us to decide which recordings are the canonical Beatles,
leaving the remainder to be classified as "rarities", "alternates",
"companion pieces", "bonus tracks", and so on.

The lists that follow detail my personal decisions as to what is canonical and
what is not, and why. I call my choices "reference mothers", because the recordings
I've selected may be used as the definitive reference points against which other versions
may be compared, and because these works are the spiritual mothers of all the others.

If I were in London during the active years of the Beatles, WITH FOREKNOWLEDGE of the nature
of their catalog, what would I buy to assemble a core collection?

Criteria for listing as a mother include:
- Mixed before the Beatles' breakup.
- Released for sale to the general public before the Beatles' breakup.
- Reproduced on the medium they were engineered for: vinyl.
- EMI-sanctioned UK Releases where possible.
- Most authentic contemporary mixes.
- Minimized number of duplications.
- Deserves to stay perpetually in print.

Things to avoid listing as a mother include:
- ANTHOLOGY
- STUDIO OUTTAKES
- BBC SESSIONS
- RARITIES OR VARIANT RELEASES, e.g. the original stereo mix of "Please Please Me" w/mistake.
- LONE BEATLES, e.g. the Harrison LP, Electronic Sound.
- FILM SCORES, e.g. incidental music on the USA Help! soundtrack LP.
- TONY SHERIDAN, e.g. My Bonnie (Not really a product of The Beatles.)
- CONCERTS (None were made publicly available before the band's breakup.)
- INTERVIEWS
- CHRISTMAS NOVELTIES
- FILMS (None publicly for sale before breakup, no VCRs or DVDs!)

Using these criteria, one winds up with a mostly monaural catalog of work as listed above,
and relisted below in different useful sequences.
